Assign Roles

 Basic prompt:

Write a two paragraph birthday letter to my grandmother.

Better prompt:

Acting as a '90s country-music singer, write a two paragraph birthday letter to my grandmother.

Be Specific

 Non-concise prompt:

What would be a good research topic for a persuasive essay?

Better prompt:

List no more than 5 research topics, using only the headings, that a college freshman might use for a persuasive essay.

"Explain [concept] as if it to a child"

Scenario 1:

You need to understand a complex concept (for example, in a scholarly article), but it's dense and confusing.

You copy+paste the text into ChatGPT asking it to explain the concepts as if talking to a child.

Scenario 2:

You typically work with adults at your job, but find out you will soon be working with a child.

Upload your content to ChatGPT asking it to simplify the concepts.

Create Tables and Charts

 Basic prompt:

Name the top ten dog breeds in America.

Better prompt:

Create a table for the top ten dog breeds in America, with columns for friendliness, size, and typical life span.

Generate To-Do Lists

 Problem area:

You do better with lists instead of chunks of text.

Improvement plan:

Upload the text of your assignment sheet and ask ChatGPT to create a To-Do list of action items.

Disclaimer: double-check it to make sure it didn't overlook anything!

Share Your Chats

 Problem:

You used ChatGPT for a solo task, but now need to continue work on that task with coworkers or peers.

Solution:

Easily share (using your name, or anonymously) your ChatGPT "chat logs" conversations as a link for anyone to view.

Ask for Guidance*

*DO NOT USE CHATGPT FOR LEGAL, FINANCIAL, ETHICAL, OR MEDICAL GUIDANCE. DO NOT USE CHATGPT TO PLAGIARIZE OR CHEAT.

Problem:

You need to create your resume, but you're not sure where to start.

 Solution:

Ask ChatGPT for suggestions on what you should include to stand out.

Quiz Yourself

Scenario:

Copy+ paste assignment information to ChatGPT and ask it to quiz you.

  • Be specific in what you want quizzed about, and how you want ChatGPT to proceed.

Example: [Upload content] Please generate a quiz by providing me with the description, and I have to answer with the name of the source type. If I am incorrect, say Correct and move on. If I am incorrect, say Incorrect, then provide the correct answer and then move on.

Adjust Your Tone

Scenario 1:

You are angry or upset about a work situation, and write an email to the offending party.

Before sending, you upload the text into ChatGPT asking it to rewrite it using a more even tone.

Scenario 2:

You started writing an email about an important topic, but are feeling self-conscious about it.

You upload it to ChatGPT asking it to adjust the tone to be more clear, or more professional, etc.

Creative Support: Facts

Scenario:

You want to write a short story set during a historical event, but you're not super familiar with that time period.

You ask ChatGPT to provide a rundown of society's conventions, or fashions, or inventions, or food, etc. to help you create an authentic atmosphere for your characters.

Creative Support: Fun

Scenario:

At the last minute, you have to babysit your niece and nephew, but you don't have much for them to occupy themselves with.

You ask ChatGPT to come up with game ideas, or kids jokes, or age-appropriate stories.

Discover New Favorites

Uses:

To discover something new that's similar to your current interest, enter some of your favorite music artists, or movies, or books, etc. into ChatGPT and ask for a list of titles by other creators that you might like based on your interests.

Stay Organized

 Default use:

ChatGPT will name each "chat log" for you, and display it by that name in the left-hand navigation pane.

Better use:

Rename your "chat logs" based on the task or the purpose (example: for work, or the name of a class/assignment) to easily identify it for future use.
