ETD Review 'Policy Check' - What It Is Not

  • ETD Review 'Policy Check' is not proof-reading or copy-editing. Professional proof-reading and/or copy-editing should be done before you submit your manuscript for review and publication, and only happens if you pay for such a service.

ETD Review 'Policy Check' - What It Is

  • ETD Review 'Policy Check' is the last line of defense before publication to ensure your manuscript meets copyright compliance and Graduate Studies policy requirements, and to ensure it will best serve you in your future career.
  • It happens after you have defended your thesis or dissertation and begins once you have submitted your final manuscript for publication.
  • When you submit your manuscript for ETD Review 'Policy Check', you and your committee are indicating that you believe it is ready for publication and that no further revision is needed.
    • ETD Review 'Policy Check' is a secondary checkpoint, but the primary responsibility for adherence to policy and copyright compliance lies with you and your committee. When you sign and submit the Distribution License Electronic Form, you are attesting to this.
  • An ETD must pass Policy Check for a student to qualify for graduation. Please adhere to all deadlines and submit any requested revisions promptly to graduate on time.

What to Expect While Your ETD is in Review for 'Policy Check'

  • The ETD Librarian addresses manuscripts in the order they are received. They ensure an ETD meets the criteria that you see in the Final Draft Checklist. (See the Guidelines and Templates section on the "Templates, Guides, Downloads, & Links" tab for a copy of this checklist.)
  • The ETD Librarian will spot-check your document for major and/or recurring errors that go against Graduate Studies policy and/or copyright compliance. Then they will either approve your manuscript for publication, or, ask you to correct noted errors.
    • The ETD Librarian will not proofread the entire manuscript and cannot make corrections for you.
  • Ideally, turn-around is about two weeks from the submission of your manuscript to you receiving comments, depending on the number of ETDs to be checked. Manuscripts submitted early in the semester (far before ETD Deadline) will take less time.
