Library Materials Donors: Acceptable Gifts

Guide for gift books and other donations to the MU library collections

General Policy

Drinko Library welcomes gifts that support the curricular, research, and overall needs of the University community that meet the standards established within the University and Library Mission and Values. Donated items must be handled consistently with established library policies and procedures. The Library cannot accept all potential gifts. This document is designed to give prospective donors an overview of the gift process.


Please note that the Marshall University librarians and staff cannot retrieve items from a private residence or location off campus. Please arrange to deliver boxed items to the Drinko or Morrow Library receiving areas.

Items We Generally Can Use

  • hardback books complementing the curriculum
  • quality paperbacks
  • current textbooks
  • music scores
  • sound recordings
  • DVDs

Items We Generally Cannot Use

  • videos (VHS tapes)
  • compact discs (CDs) and cassette tapes
  • newspapers
  • journals
  • material in poor condition (water-damaged, mildewed, missing or brittle pages, warped, etc.)
  • outdated textbooks
  • law books and encyclopedias
