Appalachia is often defined by those outside of the region, those who have no stake, heart or connection. These out-of-touch and misinformed definitions are riddled with stereotypes and generalizations. One goal of this exhibition is to fill the walls with original Appalachian artwork that reflects local artists' lives as they define it. Another is to seek to empower artists and storytellers through the opportunity to showcase their truth in creation. In Reframing Appalachia: Images, stories and dreams for the future we hope that artists localize their artwork as much as possible. For this exhibition, we encourage students, faculty, staff and community members to enter works that speak to their lived experiences. This year we are accepting poetry and other short works of writing.
Eligibility: Open to all community artists.
Show dates: January 13- May 11, 2020
–Drop off entries to library:December 2 & 3, 2019 | 8:30am - 5pm
–Jurors select artworks: December 6, 2019
–Email notification of accepted/not accepted works: December 9, 2019
–Pickup artwork not selected:December 11 & 12, 2019 | 8:30am - 5pm
–Install dates: December 13-16, 2019
–Pickup artwork at the end of exhibit:May 14 & 15, 2020 | 8:30am - 5pm
All work must be fully assembled, completelydry, and ready to display in a highly trafficked public setting.
-Frames are required for 2D work, including poetry and other short works of literature must have hanging wire on the back.
-3D work must be no larger than 45 inches high by 26 inches wide, by 7 inches deep, and also weigh 5lbs or less to fit within locked display cases.
-Framed work and wall-hanging, three-dimensional pieces must be wired securely. All other three-dimensional works must be self-supporting.
