Music Research Guide: Vocal and Choral Music

This online guide is developed specifically for those doing research in music. It provides a recommended list of resources which encompasses print materials, electronic databases, and selected Web resources.

Library Information

To find books and materials in the Marshall University Libraries on this topic, log on to the library catalog. Then select Subject from the dropdown tab. Enter any of the following terms to find materials on vocal or choral music:

  • Vocal music

  • Choruses

  • Part-songs

  • Sacred vocal music

  • Songs

  • Sacred songs

  • Choirs (Music)

  • Choral music

  • Choral singing

In addition, to find music of or about a particular musical genre, enter the term as a subject search, e.g., Motet, Oratorio, etc.  After the search terms have been entered, select any of the qualifiers to filter by format, language, location, etc.

To browse in the stacks in either the Music Library or in Drinko Library, the following classification numbers can be used as a guide to locating materials on vocal or choral music:

  • M 1497 to M 1998 = Secular vocal music, including songs or choruses (Music Library)

  • M 1999 to M 2199 = Sacred vocal music, including songs, choruses, and hymns (Music Library)

  • ML 1400 to ML 3275 = Both secular and sacred vocal music (Drinko)

  • MT 820 to MT 949 = Singing and voice culture (Drinko)

  • MT 955 to MT 960 = Production of operas, and music in theaters (Drinko)
