Music Research Guide: Instrumental Music

This online guide is developed specifically for those doing research in music. It provides a recommended list of resources which encompasses print materials, electronic databases, and selected Web resources.

General Information

To find books and materials in the Marshall University Libraries on this topic, log on to the library catalog. Then select Subject from the dropdown tabs. Enter any of the following terms to find materials on instrumental music:

  • Instrumental music

  • Instrumentation and orchestration

  • Band music

  • Orchestra (for books about the orchestra)

  • Orchestral music (for scores of orchestral music)

  • String orchestra music

  • Chamber music

  • Percussion music

  • Military music

In addition, to find music of or about a particular instrument, enter the name of that instrument as a subject, e.g., Piano music, etc. After the search terms have been entered, select any of the qualifiers to filter by format, language, location, etc.

To browse in the stacks, the following classification numbers can be used as a guide to locating materials on instrumental music:

  • M 5 to M 1490 = Music for instruments, either solo, chamber music, or larger ensembles (Music Library)

  • ML 459 to ML 1380 = Books about instruments and instrumental music (Drinko)

  • MT 70 to MT 86 = Books about Orchestra and Orchestration (Drinko)

  • MT 170 to MT 810 = Books about Instrumental Techniques (Drinko)
