Music Research Guide: Folk & World Music

This online guide is developed specifically for those doing research in music. It provides a recommended list of resources which encompasses print materials, electronic databases, and selected Web resources.

Library Information

To find books and materials in the Marshall University Libraries on this topic, log on to the library catalog. Then select Subject from the dropdown tabs. Enter any of the following terms to find materials on folk or world music:

  • Folk music

  • Folk singers

  • Folk songs

  • Ballads

  • World music

  • Ethnomusicology

To search for music of a particular country, use the Keyword option on the search screen of the library catalog and select "music" as one of the terms, and the name of the country as another of the terms. A keyword search may be further limited by format, language, location, etc. by selecting any of the filters located on the bottom half of the search screen.

To browse in the stacks in either the Music Library or in Drinko Library, the following classification numbers will help you locate materials on folk or world music:

  • M 1627 to M 1900 = National music (Music Library)

  • M 1994 = Children's songbooks which contain many folksongs of various countries (Music Library)

  • ML 3545 to ML 3780 = Books about music of various countries and regions (Drinko)

  • ML 3798 = Books on ethnomusicology (Drinko)
